Brett McLean named assistant coach of the Colorado Avalanche, returning to NHL behind the bench

Former Vancouver Canucks assistant coach Brett McLean has been hired as an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche.

The Story

Brett McLean is returning to an NHL coaching role after being named an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche.

McLean takes over the position vacated by Dave Hakstol, who left the Avalanche to become head coach of Arizona State University.

The move brings McLean back behind the bench in Colorado for a second stint. During his playing career, the BC-born forward appeared in 160 games for the Avalanche from 2005 to 2007.

McLean spent one season with the Vancouver Canucks, working under head coach Adam Foote as part of the coaching staff. He was fired after the 2025-26 campaign.

Before joining Vancouver, McLean spent eight years with the Minnesota Wild organization, including two seasons as head coach of the Iowa Wild.

During his NHL playing career, McLean suited up for 385 regular-season games, scoring 56 goals and recording 162 points.
