Seahawks rule Rashid Shaheed out for Bears game at Lumen Field

Seattle ruled receiver and return specialist Rashid Shaheed out for Monday night’s game against the Chicago Bears at Lumen Field after a knee injury.

The Story

Seattle has ruled Rashid Shaheed out of Monday night’s matchup against the Chicago Bears at Lumen Field, confirming the receiver and return specialist will miss the game. The Seahawks made the decision on Saturday, Oct. 31 after the knee injury kept Shaheed out of all three practices during the week.

In an update on Saturday, head coach Mike Macdonald said, “Right now, he’s out this game and we’ll recalibrate next week,” stopping short of naming a return timeline beyond that. Shaheed injured his knee during Seattle’s Oct. 25 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs and did not return.

The practice-week progression also factored into the ruling, with Shaheed finishing Thursday, Friday and Saturday as a nonparticipant before Seattle designated him out. The Seahawks must replace more than one role on offence and special teams, because Shaheed’s absence comes alongside another key personnel change.

Velus Jones Jr. was also ruled out with a hamstring injury, further tightening Seattle’s available return options. With those two players unavailable, second-year receiver Tory Horton is expected to see a bigger opportunity both as a receiver and as part of the return responsibilities.

The Seahawks’ need to adjust is broader than a simple swap in personnel, since the team will have to account for missing receiving snaps as well as special-teams return planning. Shaheed has recorded 16 catches for 163 yards this season, according to NFL.com.

Seattle did receive one addition at running back, with Macdonald confirming that Zach Charbonnet will make his season debut against Chicago after recovering from a playoff ACL injury. That provides another backfield option, while Horton’s role is expected to be shaped by the receiving and return work left behind by Shaheed’s injury-related absence.
