2 dead and 2 injured after pedestrians struck outside Tsawwassen Mills Mall, Delta Police says

Delta Police say a vehicle struck four pedestrians outside Tsawwassen Mills Mall, killing two and sending two others to hospital.

The Story

Two people died and two others were taken to hospital after four pedestrians were struck by a vehicle outside Tsawwassen Mills Mall Wednesday morning in Tsawwassen, Delta, Delta Police Department said.

In posts on social media, Prime Minister Mark Carney identified the two people who died as elders from the Tsawwassen First Nation and said his thoughts were with their families and the injured.

Police said preliminary information indicated the driver of the vehicle involved may have had a medical emergency prior to the collision. Delta Police also told the public there was no ongoing risk to public safety.

At 11:30 a.m., police said they were on the scene of the collision on Tsawwassen First Nation lands. Police posted that four pedestrians had been struck and were being dealt with by Emergency Health Services.

The Tsawwassen First Nation confirmed in a statement that an incident occurred during its Truth and Reconciliation Walk, but said it would not provide additional details out of respect for families and because of ongoing response efforts. The First Nation said further information would be shared when appropriate and thanked Delta Police, emergency responders and community members who assisted.

Shortly before 11 a.m., a Civil Emergency Alert was issued for a “critical” incident on Tsawwassen First Nation lands, telling participants to walk back the way they came and stay out of the area. Police said the collision was not related to the Truth and Reconciliation Walk.

Video from the scene showed multiple ambulances lining up around a parking lot at Tsawwassen Mills Mall.
