Alleged road rage incident in South Vancouver leads to weapons charges: VPD

Vancouver police say an alleged road rage incident reported Tuesday in South Vancouver has led to the arrest of a man facing multiple weapon-related charges.

The Story

The Vancouver Police Department says it was called around noon Tuesday to the area of Fraser Street and East 45th Avenue for an alleged road rage incident.

Police allege the situation began when a woman driving slowed down for a speed bump, after which a man driving behind her began tailgating her.

According to police, the man passed her on the left, stopped in front of her, and approached her window, where the woman alleges he produced a black gun and pointed it at her before driving away.

Investigators say the VPD’s Emergency Response Team and surveillance officers located the suspect’s car near Knight Street and East 57th Avenue.

Police allege that a man matching the suspect’s description was seen walking away from the car and discarding an object in the west lane of Knight Street, then returning to his vehicle and driving away.

The Emergency Response Team stopped the man about a block later and arrested him.

VPD says investigators found a BB gun in the area where the man was seen discarding an object.

Police arrested 45-year-old Rahat Arshad Ali and charged him with assault with a weapon, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and using an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence.

Ali remains in custody pending a bail hearing.
