The Correctional Service of Canada says a warrant was issued for Jeffrey Ewert and his conditional release was suspended.
The Story
Jeffrey Ewert, a convicted murderer who had been attending law school at McGill University in Montreal, was back in custody on Saturday, according to the Correctional Service of Canada.
In a statement, the agency said a warrant was issued for Ewert and that his conditional release has been suspended. It said this type of warrant is issued when “there are reasonable grounds to believe that the offender has breached a condition of release or that the risk they present can no longer be safely managed in the community.”
The Correctional Service of Canada said that, following a suspension, the case is reviewed under its post-release decision-making process, which may include further consideration by the Parole Board of Canada. No further details were provided.
Ewert, now in his 60s, was convicted in the 1980s of second-degree murder and attempted murder involving violent attacks committed in British Columbia against two female victims, one of whom was 15 years old.
The Correctional Service of Canada said Ewert spent 40 years in federal prison and was granted day parole in 2025. The story said news of his law studies at McGill emerged in early October and that he has since been barred from campus.
