TransLink to run overnight SkyTrain testing on Expo and Millennium lines for five months starting Oct. 3

TransLink says it will conduct overnight testing on parts of the Expo and Millennium lines for five months starting Oct. 3, which is not expected to disrupt service but may increase noise.

The Story

TransLink says it will conduct overnight testing on sections of the Expo and Millennium lines starting Saturday, Oct. 3.

The transit authority said the five-month project will not require service disruptions, but it expects some residents near the tracks to hear increased noise during overnight hours.

According to TransLink, the testing is its “largest technological upgrade in its history,” and it will be done outside regular service hours.

TransLink said the work is a key step ahead of opening a new 40,000-square-foot Operations Control Centre in 2027, which it says will support major network expansions including the Broadway Subway Extension in 2027 and the Dave Barrett (Surrey Langley) Extension in 2029.

TransLink said that during testing, the new centre will gradually take control of trains and test operations including regular daily service, routine maintenance, and emergency response.

The overnight testing will run on Saturdays from 1:45 a.m. to 5:45 a.m., Sundays from 1:45 a.m. to 6:45 a.m., and Mondays from 12:45 a.m. to 4:45 a.m.

TransLink said the testing will rotate between locations to minimize overnight noise on affected communities, and it will suspend alarms and announcements when possible to reduce noise.
