Dylan Garand stops 19 as Rangers beat Canucks 6-2 in first game since Shesterkin injury

Dylan Garand made 19 saves as the New York Rangers defeated the Vancouver Canucks 6-2 on Sunday night.

The Story

Ty Kartye and Will Cuylle each scored twice to help the New York Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks 6-2 on Sunday night, in the first game since goaltender Igor Shesterkin was ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

Kartye snapped a 2-2 tie with his second goal at 18:25 of the second period, and the Rangers went on to win their fourth straight at home to start the season.

Alexis Lafreniere and Gabe Perreault also scored for New York, while J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad each added two assists. Shesterkin injured his right knee Friday night in a loss at Washington, and Spencer Martin dressed as Garand’s backup.

Garand, who had been placed on waivers by the Rangers before the season but was not claimed, made 19 saves for New York as it improved to five wins in seven games this season.

The scoring began 27 seconds into the game when Kartye opened it for the Rangers. Jake DeBrusk tied it 17:04 into the first period for Vancouver, before Cuylle put New York ahead 2:09 into the second.

Elias Pettersson scored short-handed at 16:56 of the second to tie the game again, but Kartye answered with his go-ahead goal. Lafreniere then extended New York’s lead to 4-2 at 1:04 of the third on the power play.

Perreault made it 5-2 at 5:57, and Cuylle added another with less than five minutes remaining to complete the 6-2 win. Vancouver goalie Kevin Lankinen finished with 19 saves.

With the loss, the Canucks fell to 2-5-0 under new head coach Manny Malhotra. Vancouver also lost 4-1 at New Jersey on Saturday.
