A High River man says he checked a Lotto 6/49 ticket while fueling in Calgary and discovered he won the Aug. 22 $1 million guaranteed prize draw.

Julio Benitez of High River, Alta., says a fuel stop turned into a lottery win when he remembered to check a Lotto 6/49 ticket he had tucked in his pocket. He said he had nearly forgotten to verify the ticket, but went inside as he was filling up his vehicle.
Benitez bought his winning ticket from the Flying J at 11511 40th St. SE in Calgary and says the validation screen went black before he was told he had won money. He later tried to interpret the validation slip while the cashier was on the phone, initially thinking it could be much smaller before realizing it was a $1 million prize.
Benitez described reacting with excitement after the win was confirmed, saying he left the store and jumped and screamed, “Thank you, God!” He said he plans to use the prize money to pay bills and help his family, adding that his son has a baby on the way.
The $1 million guaranteed prize win came from the Lotto 6/49 draw held Aug. 22. Benitez’s winning selection is listed as 30526413-01.
