Bears beat Seahawks 34-17 as Caleb Williams strikes early and Jeffery Simmons dominates on defence

Caleb Williams threw a touchdown on the opening drive and Jeffery Simmons made an impact after arriving from Tennessee as the Chicago Bears beat the Seattle Seahawks 34-17 on Monday night.

The Story

The Chicago Bears took control early and held on for a 34-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night at Seattle’s home field.

Williams was highly efficient for the Bears, completing 71% of his passes for 247 yards while committing no turnovers and taking just one sack. He capped the opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Luther Burden and helped set up three short touchdown runs by D’Andre Swift.

Simmons, acquired last week from Tennessee for a package that included two first-round picks, made his presence felt quickly. He recorded a sack on the opening drive, added another tackle for loss, and finished with six tackles and a pass defensed as Chicago limited Seattle to 252 yards total and one third-down conversion on 11 tries.

Seattle’s quarterback Sam Darnold finished 17 of 34 for 188 yards and two touchdowns. However, his fourth-quarter interception set up Swift’s third touchdown, which extended the Bears’ lead to 34-17 with 4:41 remaining.

The Seahawks struggled again on the ground, running for only 81 yards despite last week’s trade for three-time All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson and the return of Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price from injuries.

After the Bears’ opening touchdown, they added two more field goals in the first half and built a 20-9 lead in the third quarter on another efficient touchdown drive that ended with Swift’s 1-yard run.

Late second quarter, Seattle avoided further separation when Darnold connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba on a 43-yard pass with 30 seconds left. Early in the fourth, Jason Myers had a 33-yard field goal blocked, but the Seahawks responded on the next possession when DeMarcus Lawrence forced a fumble by Colston Loveland.

That turnover led to Darnold’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp, and Seattle converted the two-point try to pull within 20-17. The Bears answered with another touchdown drive, then finished the game after Darnold’s interception.
