Alaska’s top federal prosecutor confirms criminal probe over alleged “spoiler” ballot scheme

Alaska U.S. Attorney Michael J. Heyman confirmed a criminal investigation tied to an alleged effort to confuse voters by putting a candidate on the ballot with the same name as a Republican incumbent.

The Story

Alaska U.S. Attorney Michael J. Heyman confirmed Friday that a criminal investigation is underway involving an alleged scheme intended to confuse voters by placing a candidate on the ballot with the same name as the Republican incumbent.

Heyman said he would not comment on what specific crimes authorities are looking into or identify the targets of the probe, but encouraged the public to come forward with tips that could help investigators.

“When credible information comes out, we are committed to pursuing that information to deceive voters and we will act on it. We are acting on it intensely and swiftly,” Heyman said.

Heyman’s announcement follows denials by Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola, who said Thursday that she did not know anything about an alleged effort to put Dan J. Sullivan Jr. on the ballot.
