Starbucks has announced plans to close roughly 250 stores across Canada and the United States, with the company indicating in a regulatory filing that most of the locations are expected to shut down by the end of fiscal 2026.
The closures are expected to trigger about US$300 million in restructuring charges, according to reporting referenced in the filing, and represent about one per cent of the company’s roughly 18,000 stores in North America.
The latest announcement comes after Starbucks closed 627 stores worldwide about a year earlier, including its Seattle Roastery, and laid off approximately 900 employees.
Although some Canadian stores are slated to close, Starbucks says it is continuing to open and refresh other locations, including ongoing redesign efforts intended to improve the customer experience.
In Metro Vancouver, Starbucks reported “coffeehouse uplifts” for three locations, describing the projects as redesigns meant to create more welcoming and comfortable spaces for customers to spend time.
The company also pointed to refreshed locations in Alberta as part of its broader strategy to focus on the “coffeehouse experience,” even as it carries out additional store closures.
