The Story

Advanced voting is now open across Vancouver ahead of the Oct. 17 municipal election, with voting available at close to 90 locations spanning the city. Advanced voting days run Oct. 7, 10 and 13 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. Voters need to bring their voting cards mailed out in mid-September. People who aren’t registered must bring two pieces of identification to verify their names and addresses, and more than 80 voting stations can be found on the city’s website.

A free community session focused on repairing clothing and other fabric and leather items is scheduled for Oct. 8 at Kingsgate Mall. The event, listed as Mending in the Mall, runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will provide sewing machines and irons. It takes place near Stoxx Vintage at Kingsgate Mall, 370 East Broadway.

Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh is scheduled to appear in Vancouver this week at two separate venues, accompanied by former studio executive Robert Kraft as they explore his creative journey. The discussion is planned for Oct. 7 at 5:45 p.m. at the Rio Theatre, 1660 E Broadway, and Oct. 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the Vancouver Playhouse, 600 Hamilton St. The event is listed at $32 and up.

Coquitlam’s Mackin House Museum is hosting Phantasmagoria Nights: Vintage Horror Projection Show on Oct. 9 and Oct. 16 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The presentation traces the history of magic lanterns and a Victorian-era phantasmagoria show, and includes footage from slides made in the 1800s. The show includes an early version of horror theatre, with attendees able to experience vintage animations or make their own projector slides. The event is for ages 12 and up and may not be suitable for those sensitive to flashing lights; tickets are $15 per person and registration is required.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Market is returning for its 10th year this weekend, bringing together more than 80 makers from across Metro Vancouver. The market is encouraged for attendees to arrive in costume, with events running Oct. 9 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Oct. 10 and 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Maritime Labour Centre, 1880 Triumph St. Admission starts at $4 per person.
