Michael Kenna’s “Beautiful Fukushima” opens at Kostuik Gallery in Vancouver from Oct. 15 to Nov. 1

Kostuik Gallery in Vancouver is hosting Michael Kenna’s exhibition Beautiful Fukushima from October 15 through November 1, with an opening reception on October 15.

The Story

Kostuik Gallery is presenting Beautiful Fukushima, a new body of work by British photographer Michael Kenna, marking the 15-year anniversary of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The exhibition features 50 sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs, and will be on view from October 15 through November 1 at the gallery’s location at 1070 Homer Street in Vancouver.

An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, October 15, from 5 to 7 p.m., with the artist in attendance.

In public remarks included with the exhibition announcement, Kenna said the word Fukushima brings back dark memories from 15 years ago, and he compared the subject to kintsugi—the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum—and to the mythological phoenix, which is reborn from its own ashes.

The gallery said this is Kenna’s 2026 return to Kostuik Gallery after his work first appeared there in a 2019 group exhibition, and that Beautiful Fukushima is his 2026 dedicated solo presentation.

Kostuik Gallery provided listed hours for visitors: Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
