Gina Hinojosa was elected governor of Texas on Tuesday, becoming the state’s first Latina governor and ending a decades-long stretch of Republican leadership.
The Story
Gina Hinojosa was elected governor of Texas on Tuesday, defeating incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and becoming Texas’ first Latina governor.
Her win also marked the first time a Democrat has held the office since Ann Richards in the 1990s. Abbott, who first took office in 2015, had previously won his races by double digits.
Hinojosa’s victory was part of a broader set of Democratic results in Texas, where James Talarico won election to the U.S. Senate over Republican Ken Paxton.
At her victory party in Austin, Hinojosa told supporters, “It never bothered me that they doubted me. It bothered me that they doubted us,” adding, “Texas, my faith in you never wavered.”
