Rangers beat Canucks 6-2 as Dylan Garand makes 19 saves in Igor Shesterkin’s absence

Dylan Garand stopped 19 shots as the New York Rangers defeated the Vancouver Canucks 6-2 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

The Story

Dylan Garand made 19 saves and the New York Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks 6-2 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday in their first game since learning goalie Igor Shesterkin would be out for the rest of the season with a lower-body injury.

Tye Kartye and Will Cuylle each scored their first two goals of the season for New York. Alexis Lafreniere and Gabe Perreault each had a goal and an assist, while J.T. Miller and Mika Zibanejad recorded two assists apiece. The Rangers improved to 5-2-0 and began their home schedule with a 4-0-0 record.

Shesterkin was hurt in a 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on Friday. The Rangers announced on Saturday that he would miss the remainder of the season, with Garand set to take the opportunity to be the team’s No. 1 goalie this season.

The Canucks’ Jake DeBrusk and Elias Pettersson scored for Vancouver, which lost its fourth straight game and fell to 2-5-0.

Kartye scored 27 seconds into the first period to give New York a 1-0 lead. Vancouver tied it 1-1 at 17:04 on DeBrusk’s goal, then Cuylle restored New York’s advantage 2-1 at 2:09 with a shot past Kevin Lankinen’s glove from the top of the left circle. Pettersson tied the game 2-2 with a short-handed goal off the rush at 16:56.

Kartye put the Rangers ahead 3-2 at 18:25 of the second period with his second goal of the game. The play began with a clean breakout by Vladislav Gavrikov, and Miller moved the puck across the zone to Kartye, who scored from the near-side with a shot from the left circle.

Lafreniere extended New York’s lead to 4-2 with a power-play goal at 1:04 of the third period off a pass from Perreault. Perreault started the first power-play unit in the third period after replacing Pavel Dorofeyev, and Lafreniere scored with Lankinen out of the crease after contacting Miller above the blue paint. The officials conferred briefly, and the goal stood without a challenge from Vancouver.

Perreault made it 5-2 at 5:57 with a deflection of Adam Fox’s shot, and Cuylle scored on a rebound at 15:22 to set the 6-2 final.
