District of North Vancouver firefighters responded to an overnight fire at Dorothy Lynas Elementary and investigators say it appears to have started on the south end of the building.
The Story
District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services responded to alarms at Dorothy Lynas Elementary around 12:45 a.m. on Friday and quickly located a fire on the south side of the building.
Crews spent about 25 to 30 minutes fighting the blaze in multiple units, according to DNVFRS Assistant Chief Scott Ferguson, and the work involved addressing a doorway and the roof. Firefighters had to go under the roof and open up walls to help prevent the fire from spreading, and smoke damage is evident throughout the school.
A total of five units responded, with 25 firefighters working. The investigation is in its preliminary stages, and North Vancouver RCMP say it seems to have started at the southern end of the building.
The school remained closed on Friday and is expected to reopen on Monday, Oct. 5.
