The Abbotsford Canucks scored six times in the second period to defeat the Coachella Valley Firebirds 7–3 in their 2026–27 home-opener on October 17.
The Story
The Abbotsford Canucks opened their 2026–27 home schedule on October 17 with a 7–3 win over the Coachella Valley Firebirds, capped by a six-goal second period.
Vancouver’s AHL affiliate received goals across the lineup, with defenceman Gavin White scoring twice and adding four other second-period markers from Riley Patterson, Vilmer Alriksson, Tim Rego and Braeden Cootes.
Bennett Schimek opened the scoring in the first period, and defenceman Jimmy Schuldt recorded three assists during the win.
After the game, new Abbotsford head coach Ryan Papaioannou said the offence relied on a full roster contribution: “A lot of balance up front tonight. I think any team, any level, if you’re going to be good, you need contributions from all four lines. And I think we expect all four lines to play the same. Everybody has the right to carry pucks and make plays, and it’s something we’re trying to instill in them. We don’t want guys that are on the so-called fourth liners to play like they’re on the fourth line. Make plays, score goals.”
Going into the home-opener, Abbotsford had one win in its first four games of the season, a 4–3 victory over the Colorado Eagles on October 10. The team had lost its first two games of the season 4–2 to the Calgary Wranglers before falling to the Eagles in a shootout.
The Canucks continue their current home-stand with a rematch against Coachella Valley tonight at 4:00 pm PDT, before returning to the ice next weekend against Calgary at the Rogers Forum on Saturday at 5:00 pm PDT and Sunday at 3:00 pm PDT.
