B.C. NDP caucus meets Thursday to choose interim leader after election defeat

A reduced B.C. NDP caucus is scheduled to meet at the legislature Thursday to discuss who will lead the party on an interim basis after its weekend election loss.

The Story

Members of the reduced B.C. NDP caucus are set to meet at the legislature Thursday to discuss who will serve as interim leader following the party’s weekend election defeat.

The caucus has been cut to 28 members after entering Saturday’s election with 47.

The B.C. Conservatives won a two-thirds majority with 63 seats.

Outgoing NDP premier David Eby announced his resignation as party leader in his election-night concession speech, and it is not clear from the available information whether he will attend the caucus meeting.

The outgoing caucus met online on Wednesday, and MLA-elect Niki Sharma is expected to speak to reporters ahead of Thursday’s meeting.

Geoff Meggs, described as chief of staff for the late former NDP premier John Horgan, said the next leader faces a “reputational challenge” of proving the party can be trusted with taxpayers’ money.

Meggs also said voters want services protected, while wanting to see some balance in spending.

The materials further state that Horgan left Eby a $5.7-billion surplus when he stepped aside in 2022, and that Eby’s government turned that into a record deficit forecast to hit $14 billion this year.
