Ottawa city council has voted to rename Trump Avenue, formally ending a long-running dispute over the politically charged street name and its symbolic connection to U.S. President Donald Trump.
The street is located in Ottawa’s Central Park neighbourhood and was created in the late 1990s and early 2000s as part of a development built on former Experimental Farm land.
City staff had recommended the change, and council’s decision means Ottawa will begin choosing a new name, notify residents, and update municipal records associated with the street.
The change is expected to involve coordination beyond basic paperwork, including work with emergency services, utilities and Canada Post to support a seamless transition for addresses and navigation.
Council members said the street was never intended to reference the U.S. president, but they described that the name had become a source of discomfort for some residents over time.
Ottawa’s broader Central Park area was planned with an explicit New York City theme, featuring other streets and parks named after Manhattan landmarks such as Manhattan Crescent, Staten Way, Bloomingdale Street and Madison Park.
The rename comes as Canada–U.S. relations have been strained by trade disputes, and it adds another local municipal decision taking place amid heightened tensions involving Trump and Canadian leaders.
Staff say the renaming process will include consultation with affected homeowners before a final replacement name is approved.
