Podcast explores how fish farming feeds fishmeal production and affects communities

A new episode of The Big Story podcast says aquaculture intended to ease pressure on wild fish supplies is connected to fishmeal production carried out at more than 1,400 factories worldwide.

The Story

A new episode of The Big Story looks at what it calls the realities behind aquaculture and fish farming, arguing that the practice has not reduced pressure on the world’s fish supply and may instead compromise it.

The episode says small fish are raised, processed and grounded into fishmeal at more than 1,400 fishmeal factories worldwide, with nine of those factories located in Canada.

It also says conditions inside and around fishmeal factories and the boats used in the industry threaten communities, local economies and dozens of lives.

The episode is hosted by Maria Kestane and features guests Maya Martin and Susan Ryan from the Outlaw Ocean Project, discussing their investigation into the fishmeal industry and what they say consumers should know before choosing dinner.
