Richmond school trustee candidate Jordan Oye, running as an independent, said he believes schools should teach more reading and math and support SOGI policies.
The Story
Jordan Oye is a candidate for Richmond school trustee on an independent slate, and he lists his home neighbourhood as Seafair.
Oye is a director of finance for revenue and said he is a graduate of the Richmond School District. In his questionnaire responses, he said he is running to ensure every child has the same opportunities he believes he received through the school system and community.
Oye said schools should be safe and inspiring spaces where students can explore interests, discover passions and build core skills. He also said the environment requires supporting teachers and focusing resources directly into classrooms.
In yes/no questions, Oye said schools should teach more basics such as reading and math, and should focus more on trades training. He also said there should be enough focus on social issues in the curriculum.
He answered that school districts should not be allowed to set school tax rates, and he said students should be taught drug awareness in high school. He also supported making elementary track meets more inclusive and expanding opportunities for outdoor education.
Oye said artificial intelligence should not be banned in schools, but he said cellphones should be banned in Richmond schools.
On teacher pay and related supports, Oye said teachers are not adequately paid, and he said there should be more educational support workers in schools.
Oye also said he supports SOGI policies in Richmond schools.
