The Story
Lucas Raymond scored twice and added an assist in the first period, helping the Detroit Red Wings hand the Vancouver Canucks their ninth straight loss with a 5-2 victory at Rogers Arena on Thursday.
William Wallinder and Michael Rasmussen also scored for Detroit (4-3-3) as the team extended its point streak to six games (3-0-3). Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and Viktor Arvidsson each had two assists, while Michael Lekkerimaki added a goal and an assist for Vancouver (2-9-1).
The game featured a quick start from the Red Wings. Raymond put Detroit ahead 1-0 at 4:18 of the first period, deflecting an Albert Johansson point shot between the legs and past Vancouver goaltender Kevin Lankinen. Wallinder then made it 2-0 at 6:04, banking a shot in off Lankinen after Dylan Larkin’s cross-ice pass bounced back to him.
Vancouver got on the board when Elias Pettersson scored on the power play at 7:02, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with a one-timer under Gibson’s left pad from the right dot. Raymond restored Detroit’s two-goal edge at 8:56 with a power-play goal, pouncing on a loose puck in the crease after Arvidsson was knocked down in the blue paint.
Michal Postava made his NHL debut in place of Jonathan Gibson, who did not come out for the third period after having something in his eye. Postava stopped seven shots in relief, and Detroit’s coach Todd McLellan said after the game that Daniil Tarasov was day to day after being injured in practice on Wednesday and that Gibson’s eye issue was not believed to be serious.
Rasmussen made it 4-1 at 14:58 of the second period with a deflection in the slot. The Canucks were outshot 13-0 in the second, and Vancouver head coach Manny Malhotra said after the game there had to be “a level of concern” from the players.
Emmitt Finnie pushed Detroit ahead 5-1 at 4:00 of the third period, taking a drop pass from Arvidsson and scoring over a falling Lankinen. Lekkerimaki then completed the scoring at 10:37 of the third, converting a cross-crease pass from Marco Rossi for the 5-2 final.
