Canucks’ Filip Chytil resumes skating, coach says he’s “progressing nicely”

Vancouver Canucks forward Filip Chytil returned to the ice with the regular group during Tuesday’s morning skate ahead of a game against the New York Islanders.

The Story

Forward Filip Chytil re-joined the Vancouver Canucks during Tuesday’s morning skate, skating with the regular group as an extra ahead of the team’s matchup against the New York Islanders.

Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra said the plan is to get Chytil into a couple of practices before he sees his first in-game action. “We want to integrate him back to practice,” Malhotra said after Tuesday’s morning skate. “It’s tough to have a guy come off an injury and just right into a game situation. He has to get some bumps in practice just to make sure he’s confident and comfortable going into those physical situations, but yeah, he’s progressing nicely.”

Malhotra also noted that having Chytil back around the team provides a lift beyond the rink. “Any time you put somebody back around the guys, it gives them a boost of energy, even just in the locker room, and just his excitement level to be back with the guys and skating and participating. It’s a good boost of energy for us.”

Chytil entered the Canucks’ 2026 training camp healthy and ready to compete, flashing speed as one of Vancouver’s middle-six centres. He had been paired with Drew O’Connor and Jonathan Lekkerimäki heading into his first pre-season game, before tangling with a referee in the first period and leaving with a lower-body injury. The forward was placed on injured reserve to start the regular season.
