Nanaimo Clippers say they cut ties with exec after learning of RCMP investigation

The Nanaimo Clippers say they terminated an executive’s employment once they learned the RCMP was investigating him for sexual exploitation offences.

The Story

The Nanaimo Clippers say they did not know of sexual exploitation allegations against an executive when the team hired him.

In an online statement, the junior hockey team said that once the organization learned about the RCMP investigation into Tyler King, it ended his employment.

RCMP announced Monday that it began investigating King in 2024, around the same time he left the Okotoks Oilers, a team in southern Alberta that plays in the British Columbia Hockey League.

After working with the Oilers, King went on to the BCHL’s Nanaimo team before eventually teaching sports journalism at a university in New York state.

Last week, police arrested King at a U.S. border crossing in Ontario and charged him with sexual exploitation offences involving three underage Junior A hockey players.

The RCMP said the 39-year-old had worked with various teams across Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia.
