Whitecaps aim for a club points record in Saturday finale vs. CF Montreal

Vancouver, already top of the MLS Western Conference, visits CF Montreal on Saturday seeking a win that would set a new single-season club points record.

The Story

The Vancouver Whitecaps will close out their MLS regular season with a Decision Day match against CF Montreal on Saturday, with head coach Jesper Sorensen urging his team to keep its recent level as the playoffs approach.

Vancouver moved back to the front of the Western Conference with a 5-1 win over the Seattle Sounders last time out, and the club enters the finale after winning three of its last four matches while scoring nine goals across its previous two games. Sorensen said his focus is on trying to win the game while also weighing selection for the longer term: "To try and win the game, of course, like I approach every time." He added, "Obviously, we played there already once this year, and it didn't work out the best for us. Hopefully, we are going to be better this time."

Vancouver can set a new franchise single-season points record with a win on Saturday. The Whitecaps enter the finale on 61 points, already securing the top seed in the Western Conference, and a victory would surpass the 63 points the club collected last year. CF Montreal, by contrast, are at the bottom of the division with 26 points and drew 1-1 with New York City FC on Saturday, eliminating NYCFC from playoff contention.

The meeting also features two players to watch. For Montreal, Prince Owusu has 21 direct goal contributions this season (15 goals and six assists). For Vancouver, Brian White scored twice in the team’s win over Seattle on Sunday and sits at 20 regular-season goals in 2026; he needs two goals in the final match to equal the Whitecaps’ single-season scoring record of 22 set by Camilo Sanvezzo in 2013.
