Canucks’ losing streak reaches five games after 3–2 loss to Islanders at UBS Arena

The Vancouver Canucks extended their losing streak to five games with a 3–2 defeat to the New York Islanders on Tuesday night at UBS Arena.

The Story

The Vancouver Canucks’ losing streak reached five games after they fell 3–2 to the New York Islanders on Tuesday night at UBS Arena.

Max Sasson and Brock Boeser scored Vancouver’s two goals. Leevi Meriläinen stopped 35 of 38 shots in net.

New York jumped out to a 2–0 lead by the end of the first period on two quick goals after turnovers. Kyle Palmieri opened the scoring at 14:57, and Matias Maccelli made it 2–0 at 15:50.

Sasson got Vancouver on the board early in the second period. Arshdeep Bains and Jamie Oleksiak set up the goal at 7:52, pulling the Canucks within one. Less than two minutes later, Boeser scored on the power play at 18:55 to tie the game after Vancouver’s man-advantage was set up following an Islanders penalty.

The Islanders regained the lead in the third period when Kyle Palmieri scored his second of the night at 5:38. Vancouver pressed late, but a hooking call on Zeev Buium after the game was on the line put the Canucks short-handed and helped blunt the push for an equalizer.

Despite the loss, Vancouver’s penalty kill held strong through much of the night. The Canucks went perfect on the penalty kill for the first time this season, and they killed off the majority of their penalties even as Meriläinen was pulled late.

The defeat also marked the end of Meriläinen’s personal shutout streak against the Islanders at 74:57, and Vancouver’s loss at UBS Arena was their first-ever there. Filip Hronek also recorded a point in all seven games he has played against the Islanders as a Canuck.

Next, the Canucks play the Florida Panthers on October 15 at 4:00 p.m. PT.
