Kraken GM Jason Botterill explains why Seattle acquired Matthew Wood from Nashville

Seattle acquired forward Matthew Wood from the Nashville Predators in a one-for-one trade for Shane Wright on Sunday.

The Story

Seattle Kraken general manager Jason Botterill said the team believes Matthew Wood can add strength and provide value in two key areas as it completed a one-for-one trade with the Nashville Predators on Sunday evening.

In the deal, Shane Wright was sent from the Kraken to Nashville, while Wood went the other way to Seattle.

Botterill described the move as an attempt to “add more strength to his body and to his frame,” while also pointing to Wood’s ability “to utilize his reach very well to protect pucks” and “to get a shot off.” He said the club also expects Wood’s “hockey sense and … shot” to be among the attributes he can bring to the Kraken, according to Botterill’s comments as reported.

Wood, a 6-foot-4 forward listed at 202 pounds, was selected 15th overall by the Predators in the 2023 NHL Draft. Wright was chosen fourth overall by the Kraken in the 2022 NHL Draft.

After playing three seasons split between the University of Connecticut and the University of Minnesota, Wood spent one full year with the Predators organization before the trade.
