Victoria-Beacon Hill candidate Joachim Agou says he takes responsibility for his words after being removed from the Conservatives over posts the NDP called racist.
The Story
Joachim Agou, a candidate in British Columbia’s provincial election for Victoria-Beacon Hill, says he is truly sorry for online posts that led to his removal from the Conservative Party.
Agou said in social media posts that he takes responsibility for his words, while rejecting any accusation of racism.
One post Agou made said a car that drove through a pro-Palestine protest “should have reversed” over demonstrators.
Another post showed Agou sharing a meme that used an expletive to describe Pakistan.
Agou said he should have expressed himself “more clearly and calmly” and that such demonstrations “should not bring a city to a standstill or put lives at risk.”
He said he understands why the Tories withdrew their support and that he will run as an independent in the riding.
The NDP had called the posts racist.
Interim Conservative Party leader Lorne Doerkson said the posts were inexcusable and that, if Agou is elected on Oct. 24, he will not be part of the Conservative caucus.
