A lineup of company earnings reports, a Bank of Canada update, and new economic releases are among the key items this week.
The Story
Earnings reporting is set to span the week, beginning Monday with Barrick Mining Corp., followed by Finning International Inc. and Hydro One Ltd. on Tuesday. Wednesday brings results from CGI Inc., Cargojet Inc., CAE Inc. and Power Corp. of Canada, while Brookfield Corp. and Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. are scheduled for Thursday and Onex Corp. is set to report on Friday.
The Bank of Canada will release on Tuesday its summary of deliberations for its interest rate decision from last month. The central bank increased its key interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 2.5 per cent, citing concern that elevated energy prices could spill over and become generalized inflation.
On the policy and economic side, the Economic Club of Canada plans a discussion Tuesday on turning defence spending into lasting economic value. The talk is expected to include MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley, Saab Canada president Cara Salci, executive director of Downsview Aerospace Innovation & Research Phil Arthurs, and IMT Group chief financial officer Patricia Widmeyer.
Federal cabinet ministers are also scheduled to travel across Canada to pitch the Liberal’s budget to Canadians this week. Federal Finance Minister François‑Philippe Champagne will give a speech at the Empire Club of Canada in Toronto on Friday.
Statistics Canada will release a pair of economic reports for September on Friday: its monthly survey of manufacturing and its report on wholesale trade. The reports are expected to come as the economy faces headwinds from a fresh round of tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump.
