UBC ranks 44th in THE’s 2027 global university list as top B.C. performer

The Times Higher Education released its 2027 World University Rankings, with the University of British Columbia placing 44th overall and third in Canada.

The Story

Times Higher Education (THE) released the 2027 edition of its World University Rankings, which evaluates the top 2,297 research-intensive universities from 118 countries and territories.

THE said the rankings are based on 17 performance indicators grouped into five pillars covering teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) moved up one rank to 44th overall, which the institution described as third-best in Canada, and also placed 29th among public universities.

In a breakdown of how UBC was scored, the university received 64.4 for teaching, 76.9 for research environment, 87.5 for research quality, 78 for industry, and 83.8 for international outlook, for an overall score of 77.6.

Oxford took the top spot globally with an overall score of 97.9, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University.

Other B.C. universities also appeared in the THE 2027 rankings: the University of Victoria placed in the 301–325 range, Simon Fraser University was in the 351–375 range, and the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) landed in the 1201–1400 range.

THE said 34 Canadian universities are featured in the 2027 Canada University Ranking.

THE added that this year’s World University Rankings cover more institutions than last year, noting the 2,297 universities listed this year rose from 2,191 in 2026.
