Premier David Eby calls an early provincial election, launching a new campaign with voting day set for October 24.

British Columbia will hold a provincial election on October 24 after Premier David Eby called an early vote on Tuesday, September 22.
Eby visited Government House in Victoria to seek the dissolution of the legislature from Lieutenant Governor Wendy Cocchia. The decision launches a province-wide campaign less than two years after the previous election.
The premier put the economic threat from U.S. President Donald Trump and the trade war at the centre of his case for a new mandate. His New Democrats enter the campaign with a narrow majority.
The election arrives during a leadership transition for the BC Conservatives. Kerry-Lynne Findlay resigned as leader on Sunday, with Lorne Doerkson taking over on an interim basis.
Final voting day falls one week after British Columbia’s municipal elections. The provincial and municipal contests are separate elections.
The general election call also cancels the Abbotsford-Mission byelection that had been scheduled for Saturday. Voters there will instead participate in the province-wide election.
