DC Studios’ ‘Clayface’ topped the weekend with a $24 million opening in 3,458 theatres while A24’s ‘You Can See Everything’ expanded to 2,655 locations for a $19.5 million debut.
The Story
DC Studios’ ‘Clayface’ claimed the No. 1 spot at the box office with a $24 million opening weekend in 3,458 theatres, edging out A24’s documentary sensation ‘You Can See Everything,’ which earned $19.5 million in its first weekend of wide release.
‘You Can See Everything,’ directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, increased its theatrical presence from 855 locations to 2,655 for the expansion. In two weeks, it has accumulated $45.1 million, ranking among the highest-grossing documentaries ever, according to the weekend estimates. The film’s breakout success has been linked to strong interest from Gen Z moviegoers.
‘Clayface’ arrived with a smaller-scale opening than many superhero films, but with a lower budget of $44 million. The movie, Warner Bros.’ third theatrical release for DC under James Gunn and Peter Safran, stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, a rising movie star who undergoes experimental facial surgery after a mob boss disfigures him. The film added $19 million internationally, giving DC Studios added stability following the underperformance of ‘Supergirl,’ which grossed $126 million worldwide on a $170 million production budget earlier this year.
Audience response to ‘Clayface’ was strong for the horror genre, earning an “A-” CinemaScore. Reviews were also largely positive, and the movie’s opening is described as a solid start for DC’s attempt to blend body horror with a comic-book story.
Other new releases included Laika’s ‘Wildwood,’ which debuted in third place with $11.8 million in 2,779 locations. Directed by Laika chief executive Travis Knight, the PG-13 fantasy scored an “A” CinemaScore and follows a teenage girl who enters an enchanted forest to find her abducted baby brother; however, with a reported $100 million cost, the weekend start was still considered unlikely to make it profitable. ‘Wicker’ launched with $5.8 million in 1,471 theatres, while ‘Klara and the Sun’ made $725,000 across 880 theatres and Sony’s ‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’ was not reported in grosses as it played only a limited theatrical footprint.
