Ikea Richmond is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Ikea’s first Canadian store, which opened in Richmond on Oct. 2, 1976.
The Story
Ikea Richmond marked 50 years since the company’s first foray into the Canadian market, with the store tracing its start to Oct. 2, 1976, when it opened its doors in Richmond.
Selwyn Crittendon, CEO of Ikea Canada, said in a press release that the milestone reflects the company’s focus on “making well-designed, functional home furnishing more affordable and accessible for the many Canadians.”
To mark the anniversary, Ikea Richmond is hosting three days of in-store events from Oct. 2 to 4. The weekend includes a traditional Lion Dance performance on Saturday at 11 a.m., furniture assembly races, a Kallax store and organize competition, “guess how many” contests, and an in-store hunt for iconic Ikea products, along with family-friendly activities, prizes and surprises throughout the weekend.
The celebration also features special anniversary offers inspired by 1976. On Friday only, the Agam junior chairs (white) are advertised at $9.76, down from the regular $69.99, while quantities last. On Saturday and Sunday, Kallax shelves (77x147 cm, white) are listed at half price, reduced from $99 to $49.50, limited to 500 units per day. The retailer also said that every weekend throughout October, Ikea Canada will offer one “iconic” product at 50 per cent off.
As Ikea Richmond has grown, it moved from its original location at 435A No. 3 Road (now 4351 No. 3 Road) to Sweden Way, and today to its current address at 3320 Jacombs Rd.
