Premier David Eby said the BC NDP has $250 million set aside in its platform to expand SkyTrain to Newton, after Mayor-elect Doug McCallum said only the Conservatives made a commitment.
The Story
Surrey’s newly elected mayor, Doug McCallum, said in a statement that the BC Conservatives have committed to expanding SkyTrain service to Newton, while the BC NDP “offered a meeting.”
McCallum’s position follows comments he made about Newton, where he has previously included a SkyTrain connection as part of his campaign messaging.
When asked about McCallum’s comments during a Tuesday press conference, Premier David Eby said it was important to tell British Columbians that “whether it’s our commitment” to build SkyTrain in Newton, or other major projects across the province, the NDP was building “this province.”
Eby said the BC NDP has set aside $250 million in its platform for a transit expansion to Newton, adding there is “actually money” in the costed plan for the SkyTrain expansion.
BC Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson did not hold a media availability on Tuesday, but said in a press release that under Eby, Newton has been left off the map for rapid transit.
Doerkson said he was committing to the project, and that a Conservative government would build it “on time and on budget,” arguing Newton should not have to keep waiting on promises that “never get delivered.”
