B.C. premier-designate Doerkson says he doesn’t expect quick end to U.S. trade war after midterms

Lorne Doerkson says he expects the U.S. trade war will continue and that American liquor will remain off B.C. store shelves until it is resolved.

The Story

Lorne Doerkson, B.C.’s premier-designate, says he does not expect a quick end to the trade war between the United States and Canada even after Republican election losses in the U.S. midterms.

Doerkson made the comments Wednesday in Victoria after the midterm election gave Democrats control of both houses of Congress. He said his focus is now preparing to assume government on Nov. 20.

In describing B.C.’s priorities, Doerkson said the goal is to protect local industries from American tariffs and to strengthen B.C. partnerships with any partners willing to continue doing business with the province.

He also said that until the trade war is resolved, American liquor will stay off the shelves of B.C. liquor stores.

Doerkson said U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated him after Doerkson won the Oct. 24 election, in which the Conservatives defeated Premier David Eby’s NDP.

Doerkson said he does not give any thought to what Trump says.
