The Story
Vancouver-Strathcona is a provincial riding in Metro Vancouver, in the Vancouver area.
The riding is currently represented by NDP MLA Joan Phillip, who first took office in 2023. In the 2024 B.C. provincial election, Phillip collected 13,673 votes and won 68.17 per cent of the vote.
In December 2025, Phillip was diagnosed with an illness and stepped away from her duties as MLA. She later passed away on Aug. 28 at the age of 74.
Following her death, the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs asked for donations to the BC Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
B.C. residents cast their votes in the 2026 provincial election, after B.C. NDP leader David Eby called a snap election in September, with election day held one week after municipal elections. The election will select 93 Members of the Legislative Assembly to serve in the 44th B.C. Parliament, with 47 seats needed for a majority.
