3 injured after shooting at Des Moines’ main post office; suspect in custody

Three people were injured in a Thursday shooting at Des Moines’ main post office, and police say a suspect is in custody.

The Story

A suspect was in custody in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday after two people were shot at the city’s main post office and a third was injured while trying to escape, authorities said.

Police said none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening. Sgt. Paul Parizek said the victims were at the hospital and being cared for, and that officers responded within three minutes.

The shooting happened on the second floor of the post office, and reports of shots fired began coming in at about 9:10 a.m. local time. The main post office is described as a four-story regional sorting facility just north of downtown Des Moines, across the street from one of the city’s main hospitals, with a walk-in service counter accessible to the public.

Gov. Kim Reynolds said she is in contact with Iowa’s Department of Public Safety and posted that the suspected shooter is in custody while the investigation is ongoing.

Des Moines Public Schools said that after police notified the district at 9:20 a.m. about the shooting, a nearby elementary school, welcome centre and nutrition centre went into a secure status, with no one allowed in or out. The district said the secure status was lifted after police notified them at 10 a.m. that a suspect was in custody.
