Heart of the City Festival returns for its 23rd year, running Oct. 30 to Nov. 7 in the Downtown Eastside

The 23rd annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival runs from October 30 to November 7 at more than 30 venues throughout the neighbourhood.

The Story

For nine days this fall, theatres, galleries, community centres, parks and streets across Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside will host more than 100 arts and culture events as the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival returns for its 23rd year.

The festival will run from October 30 to November 7 at more than 30 venues throughout the neighbourhood, with a program that spans theatre, dance, music, film and poetry, along with visual art, workshops, walking tours, forums and ceremony.

This year’s theme is Belonging, and the programming is centred on what it means to be seen, heard, respected and valued within a community.

Organizers say the festival has spent more than two decades working with Downtown Eastside artists, residents and organizations to share the neighbourhood’s histories, cultural traditions, lived experiences and creative practices.

The 2026 edition mixes performances and exhibitions with programming that explores the area’s social and political realities, including work addressing incarceration, addiction and harm reduction, as well as neighbourhood history and displacement, alongside dance, theatre, music and community celebrations.

Among the larger presentations are Electric Company Theatre’s Epigone, a new play by Kevin Kerr that examines grief, addiction and responsibilities to the dead.

The festival will also present Reimagining Justice: The Circle Project, a series of video installations created by artists and people with lived experience of incarceration, as well as Life at OPS, Nathaniel Canuel’s collection of short films documenting daily life at the Overdose Prevention Society.

Other listed programming includes history tours of Gastown and Black Strathcona, drag storytime, archival screenings, dance performances and Día de los Muertos celebrations.
