Canucks trade gamble on Quinn Hughes’ contract uncertainty still echoes for Wild nearly a year later

Nearly one year after Minnesota acquired Vancouver defenseman Quinn Hughes, his contract situation remains a focus as the Wild look to keep him beyond the 2026-27 season.

The Story

Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin acquired Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks last season, a move made with the understanding that Hughes’ long-term plans were uncertain. In October 2026, discussion around the deal continues as Hughes has yet to sign a long-term extension with the Wild.

The risk around Hughes’ future was explicitly tied to his contract end date. Vancouver executive Jim Rutherford had previously described Hughes’ intentions in “ominous terms” when the trade was made, saying Hughes did not intend to remain in Vancouver once his current contract expires at the end of the 2026-27 season.

The cost of the trade included a major package: up-and-coming defenseman Zeev Buium, center Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren and Minnesota’s first-round pick in the 2026 draft. While the price was steep, the provided details also note that few NHL defensemen have Hughes’ skill set, helping explain why Vancouver and Rutherford demanded a large return.

Even with Brock Faber out of the lineup with a skull fracture, Minnesota has featured one of the league’s dominant pairings built around Hughes and Guerin’s acquisition. The evidence also says Hughes has produced a goal and five points in six games with a plus-4 rating while skating on his right side with captain Jared Spurgeon, who has had early success on the top pairing.
