Canucks score four unanswered goals in third period to beat Flames 4-1

Liam Öhgren and Elias Pettersson powered the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames on home ice on Saturday.

The Story

The Vancouver Canucks scored four unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Calgary Flames 4-1, completing a comeback after Calgary led 1-0 through the first period.

Leevi Meriläinen made 23 saves for Vancouver in his first start, while Devin Cooley stopped 22 shots for Calgary.

Öhgren scored to tie the game 1-1 early in the third period, finishing a play in which his shot hit Cooley and then went under the goaltender’s arm toward the net. The goal was initially ruled no goal after the officials determined Cooley had grabbed the puck before it crossed the line, but the Canucks were awarded the tally following a video review.

Pettersson then scored Vancouver’s go-ahead goal at 9:04 of the third period. He received a pass from Öhgren in the Canuck zone and lifted a backhand past Cooley’s glove.

Drew O’Connor made it 3-1 at 16:33 of the third period on a 2-on-1 breakaway, and Aatu Raty also scored for Vancouver.

On offence, Defencemen Tom Willander and centre Linus Karlsson each recorded two assists for Vancouver. For Calgary, Matt Coronato scored on the power play in the first period.
