Police arrest two and lay charges in retail theft investigation involving agencies across the Lower Mainland

Police say a multi-agency investigation across the Lower Mainland led to two arrests and charges against one person in connection with a theft at Meadowtown Shopping Centre.

The Story

Police say an investigation that involved multiple agencies across the Lower Mainland has resulted in the arrest of two people and charges laid against one person.

Christian Darren Leggatt has been charged with possession of stolen property, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, intimidation by threats or violence and assault with a weapon, police said.

Police say the matter began on Oct. 1, when Pitt Meadows RCMP were called to a report of a theft outside a store at Meadowtown Shopping Centre.

According to police, a woman was stopped by loss prevention officers but got away with help from a man who allegedly had a weapon.

Police said the car used by the man was identified, and details of the incident were shared with police agencies across the Lower Mainland.

On Oct. 2, BC Highway Patrol’s Prohibited Driver Enforcement Team located the car in Maple Ridge and began surveillance, police said.

Police say the investigation then expanded, with Maple Ridge RCMP, the Coquitlam RCMP Strike Force Team and the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service joining surveillance efforts.

Police said the car later parked in Port Coquitlam, where the two occupants were taken into custody.

Police say the woman released on an undertaking with a future court date, and no charges have been laid against her yet.

Police said Leggatt is currently in custody and awaiting a bail hearing.
