A slow-moving nor’easter along the U.S. Northeast coast brought high winds, heavy rain and large waves, causing dangerous conditions across parts of the region. The storm was forecast to affect the Mid-Atlantic and New England through the weekend, with tens of millions of people in its path.
By Saturday, about 100,000 customers in the region were without electricity. Forecasters warned that strong winds, high tides and heavy rain could continue for several days, contributing to coastal flooding in some communities.
In Surf City, New Jersey, floodwater covered streets and entered some homes. Farther north, the storm also disrupted travel, with hundreds of flights cancelled at Boston Logan International Airport and most flights cancelled at Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
The weather also forced schedule changes for public events. The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs played a double-header Friday in Boston, and Major League Baseball later moved their Sunday series finale to Florida.
State officials urged residents to use caution. Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer told people to monitor forecasts, while New York Gov. Kathy Hochul warned that coastal flooding was the biggest threat and said the storm would also bring heavy rain, powerful winds and waves as high as 20 feet.
