TMX CEO John McKenzie says Canada should cut listing barriers for small and medium firms

TMX Group CEO John McKenzie said he wants reduced regulatory and cost barriers for companies seeking to list on the TSX.

The Story

TMX Group Ltd. chief executive John McKenzie says he would like to see reduced regulatory and cost barriers for companies wanting to list on Canada’s main stock exchange as the market competes globally.

Speaking at a conference hosted by the Alberta Securities Commission, McKenzie was asked whether he is concerned about a drop in the number of issuers trading on the TSX.

McKenzie said the trend is not limited to Canada, and that it reflects growth concentrated in a relatively few large-cap names. He said it is good to have Canadian heavyweights able to compete on the world stage, but he also wants small- and medium-cap companies to thrive and scale up.

McKenzie said the tax and regulatory burden that applies to major multibillion-dollar firms, such as Enbridge Inc., should not also fall on smaller firms with fewer resources.

He also said that for the first nine months of the year, TMX brought more than 300 new issuers into the market, including two-thirds structured products and one-third companies.
