Poilievre says he will campaign for Canadian unity in Alberta next week ahead of separation referendum

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he will be in Alberta next week to deliver a speech on Canadian unity ahead of the province’s separation referendum.

The Story

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he will be in Alberta next week to deliver a speech on Canadian unity ahead of the province’s referendum on separation.

Poilievre made the remarks at a press conference in Burlington, Ont., where he said he will be doing “additional campaigning on the ground.” He did not say where or when he would deliver his speech.

Asked about tech industrialist Elon Musk saying recently that Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec should separate, Poilievre responded that “Canadians control their own destiny.”

The premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan brushed off Musk’s comments, while Quebec’s new premier has said she won’t trigger a separation vote while U.S. President Donald Trump is in office.

Albertans are scheduled to vote on Oct. 19 on whether a future separation referendum should be held, along with nine other questions involving constitutional and immigration issues.
