UBC holds 35th annual Apple Festival at Botanical Garden on Sunday

The 35th annual UBC Apple Festival took place Sunday at the UBC Botanical Garden, featuring apple tastings and sales.

The Story

The 35th annual UBC Apple Festival was held Sunday at the UBC Botanical Garden, bringing visitors to experience a fall harvest and apple-related activities.

Organizers said the festival draws more than 10,000 apple enthusiasts each year, with apples available for purchase by the bag over the weekend. The event also featured items such as candy apples, apple cider and apple chips, and offered the chance to take home an apple tree.

Festival chair Lisa Vogt said the UBC Apple Festival helped introduce Ambrosia. She described Ambrosia as a variety that was discovered by a B.C. grower, adding that people can now buy it “anywhere in the world right now.”

Sunday’s tastings included more than 50 different types of apples, with a tasting tent featuring long lines as volunteers sliced varieties for visitors to try. The lineup included less common varieties such as Summerland Sunset, as well as one called Winter Banana, which a visitor said tasted and smelled somewhat like banana.

The festival also looked ahead to next year, hoping to offer Tropical Punch, described as the newest apple cultivated in British Columbia.
