The Story

The Carolina Hurricanes handed the Vancouver Canucks a 6-3 loss on Tuesday, handing the struggling home team a slide that has now reached eight games (0-7-2).

Stankoven and Nikolaj Ehlers led Carolina’s scoring with two goals each; both also added an assist. Nicolas Deslauriers scored a pair of goals, and Jackson Blake had three assists for the Hurricanes, who entered the game with an 8-2-1 record.

Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 14 of the 17 shots he faced for Carolina, while Vancouver goaltender Leevi Merilainen made 26 saves. Merilainen also stopped a Sebastian Aho penalty-shot attempt in the second period after Elias Pettersson was caught throwing his stick as Vancouver tried to disrupt the play.

Carolina opened the scoring at 4:44 of the first period when Stankoven beat Kochetkov for his fifth goal of the season. Stankoven, who is from Kamloops, B.C., was cheered by fans in the lower bowl.

Vancouver responded midway through the frame when Linus Karlsson scored his third goal of the season to make it 1-1. With just two seconds left in the opening period, Jonathan Lekkerimaki swiped a shot past Kochetkov to level the game again, 2-2, heading into the intermission.

Just under three minutes into the second period, Carolina took the lead again. Jesperi Kotkaniemi picked up a loose puck along the boards and set up Deslauriers, who scored to put the Hurricanes ahead 3-2.

The Canucks evened the score 3-3 when Bradly Nadeau collided with Arshdeep Bains in the slot and Sasson scored after coming out of the penalty box.

Deslauriers scored the difference maker at 4:07 of the third period, receiving a backhand pass from Nadeau along the end boards and scoring off Merilainen to make it 4-3.

Ehlers added an unassisted goal at 10:21 of the third to extend Carolina’s advantage, and he later set up Stankoven for an empty-net goal with just over two minutes remaining.

Vancouver entered the game with the league’s worst penalty kill at 58.1 per cent but killed off three infractions in the second period and a double minor in the third.
