The Story
U.S. Central Command said late Saturday that U.S. forces disabled a St. Kitts-flagged commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman after it ignored multiple warnings and attempted to leave the region.
The command said the ship had visited an Iranian port before attempting to depart. U.S. forces have been enforcing a naval blockade on Iran for months in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping waterway for vessels including oil.
The disclosure came as Iran state media reported the sound of explosions on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz and several explosions in the port of Jask on Saturday evening, though the cause was not immediately clear.
The U.S. military did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and U.S. forces have previously not announced some strikes taken in the region. Officials at the command also declined to confirm strikes when asked about local reports of explosions.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that the U.S. military carried out new limited strikes against Iran, targeting an Iranian air defence system, which he described as “minor.” U.S. Central Command did not comment on that action even after it was confirmed by Trump.
