The Story
Matt Coronato recorded a goal and three assists and the Calgary Flames cruised to a 6-2 win over the Seattle Kraken on Friday at Scotiabank Saddledome.
It was the first four-point and three-assist game of Coronato’s career, coming in his fourth full NHL season. Joel Farabee added a goal and two assists, while Morgan Frost and Matvei Gridin each had a goal and an assist. Dustin Wolf made 21 saves for Calgary.
Seattle was led by Mackie Samoskevich, who had a goal and an assist. Philipp Grubauer stopped 10 of 14 shots before being replaced at 10:40 of the second period by Joey Daccord, who made 11 saves in relief.
The Flames had beaten the Kraken in their Oct. 1 home opener in Calgary, and Seattle also won in Calgary’s next meeting at home in Seattle three nights later, both by scores of 6-1.
Calgary scored first when Frost put the Flames up 1-0 with a power-play goal at 2:32 of the first period, snapping a shot from the left circle over Grubauer’s glove on the first shot of the game for either team.
The Kraken tied the score 1-1 at 11:34 as Samoskevich’s backhand pass found Frederick Gaudreau in front. Gaudreau’s initial shot rebounded off Wolf, and Gaudreau collected the loose puck before backhanding his own rebound past the Calgary goalie.
Aydar Suniev restored Calgary’s lead at 5:45 of the second period, one-timing a pass from Frost past Grubauer. Gridin made it 3-1 with a power-play goal at 8:43 when his shot from the top of the right circle deflected off Seattle defenseman Ryker Evans’ skate and went past Grubauer.
At 10:40, Farabee extended Calgary’s advantage to 4-1, scoring on a wrist shot from the slot through Grubauer’s legs. Samoskevich cut the deficit to 4-2 on the power play at 18:15, one-timing a pass from Kaapo Kakko after winning the puck in a battle along the boards.
Coronato struck early in the third period, breaking into the Flames’ offensive zone just 39 seconds in and snapping a shot from the slot past Daccord’s glove to make it 5-2. Ryan Strome then sealed the outcome at 18:14 with a chip pass from Gridin that went up and over Daccord for the 6-2 final.
Berkly Catton also drew a secondary assist to extend his career-high point streak to six games, with two goals and five assists. The Flames and Kraken are scheduled to meet again for the fourth and final time this season on Saturday, with the second game of their home-and-home series at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.
