Kimberly Polman pleads guilty in Vancouver to charge tied to leaving Canada to join Islamic State

Kimberly Polman pleaded guilty in a Vancouver court to leaving Canada to participate in activities of the Islamic State.

The Story

Kimberly Polman, a British Columbia woman who married an Islamic State fighter, pleaded guilty on Thursday to a terrorist-related charge in a Vancouver court, the Public Prosecution Service of Canada confirmed.

The charge relates to leaving Canada to participate in activities of a terrorist group, namely the Islamic State.

Polman had been held in a Syrian detention camp for several years before being returned to Canada in 2022, and she was reported to be in poor health, including hepatitis.

In an interview in 2021, her sister—speaking on condition of anonymity—said Polman met an Islamic State fighter online and married him, that they soon separated, and that Polman later denounced the group.

Polman’s trial on two charges had been scheduled to begin on Nov. 9, and a sentencing hearing has not yet been set.
