Paul St-Pierre Plamondon voted Quebec premier as Parti Québécois wins minority government

Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has been voted in as Quebec’s newest premier after the Parti Québécois won a minority government with 59 seats.

The Story

Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has been voted in as Quebec’s newest premier, following an election in which the Parti Québécois secured a minority government.

The Parti Québécois won 59 seats on Monday night, a gain from its position three seats in 2022.

Plamondon has said he is looking at holding a referendum as part of a push to separate Quebec from Canada.

He also promised to wait until U.S. President Trump left the White House before moving ahead with that referendum effort, while noting that he would still need support from other provincial parties to do so.

A leaders debate in Montreal took place on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, ahead of Quebec’s Oct. 5, 2026 provincial election.
